For some years I worked in engine service for Southern Pacific Railroad. Here is a locomotive engineer Harold K. Johnson at San Luis Obispo, California, about to open the throttle on the northbound Coast Daylight, now called AMTRAK's Coast Starlight, for the 6 hour run to San Francisco.

The famous San Francisco Bay fog (named Karl, by the way) reliably blows in almost daily in some degree.
