Penny Kitchen

Penny Kitchen

Location: Canada

I am a visual artist and a vocalist. I was trained as a classical film animation artist at Sheridan College, Canada and have worked for Disney, Warner Brothers and Century Fox, as well as some commercial houses in Toronto. I returned to college when computers hit the scene and obtained a certificate in Multi Media, Digital Production which included some 3D animation.
My artistic journey has now directed me to portraiture. Given my animation background, I was taught that drawing is drawing, so I have affinity to all subjects whether animal or human – I simply enjoy painting portraits and welcome the challenge of capturing a soul on canvas. I work in different medias depending on the client’s preference for oil, acrylic etc.

Portraits by Penny

“Renaissance art is the painting, sculpture and decorative arts of European history known as “The Renaissance Period” originating in the 1400’s. The renaissance period is amazing for its energy and strides forward in art and music.
Renaissance Femme…
I asked my husband one evening in our studio …”if you could come up with a name for my web site, what would that be”? Without hesitation, he said, “Renaissance Femme”.
He reminded me that the renaissance artist is a practitioner of a least three disciplines. He said, you are an artist, vocalist and a multi media designer – hence… ren-femme.
Portraits - I enjoy painting musicians that are "gone " in there music because it's also a place I like to be. I hope you can feel and hear the music in these portraits.

Garrick Tyas, The Fiddle Man “Garrick Tyas, The Fiddle Man”

Garrick Tyas, the Fiddle Man, first and foremost friend, secondary, musician extraordinaire, fiddle, mandolin, but most of all … he had soul. My friend, Heinz took this shot of Garrick at one of our jams that my husband and I were hosting in Bloomfield, Ontario. The photo was blurry but captured a moment – enough to do this painting. Garrick always got gone in his music – I can relate to that…We miss him…

John Kitchen “John Kitchen”

My Husband, musician, artist, extraordinaire. Every morning for the last 35 years, I wake up to a wonderful cup of coffee, and my husband playing his guitar. He may look intense in this sketch, but, trust me, he is happy

Zeke Mazurek “Zeke Mazurek”

I took a very blurred picture of Zeke at the last concert we played together, but it captured that "get gone" moment.
It sat in my future projects file for a few years until one weekend I set aside to paint. I painted this in one night - all night - it was the night he died -
I had no idea until later, speaking with his wife. It was an awkward moment that I did not elaborate on...but never-the -less - it was ...
