Georgette Evans Grey
Watercolorist Georgette Evans Grey has been active in the local art scene wherever she has lived, from San Clemente, California to Salisbury, Massachusetts to Socorro, New Mexico. She has honed her ability with transparent watercolor by continual practice of the art of painting and by participating in workshops with locally and nationally known artists. Her love of nature and her skill with watercolor combine to create works enhanced by observation and knowledge. Despite the seeming realism, her work reflects an inner emotional view that the artist refers to as interpretive realism, a style that offers more than the mirror of a photograph or the technical mastery of a draftsman.
Evans Grey finds a never-ending source of inspiration in the beauty and grace of local flora, the textures in her local landscape, and the wonder and awe at sightings of local wildlife. “I hope to convey the emotions I feel through the expression of my personal vision. I am attracted by textures and the interplay of color and value; I sometimes enjoy presenting a more abstract view by painting from a close-cropped or macro examination of my subjects, or placing abstract passages within the confines of a realistically handled subject. I have recently been exploring and experimenting with different surfaces, and I am enjoying the new challenges.”
Despite studying art in college as well as attending art school, when it comes to watercolor Evans Grey considers herself a self-taught painter. Acknowledging the foundation learned through her formal schooling, as well as the strong influence of her quarter century as a graphic designer and typographer, she feels that observation, experimentation and workshops with locally and nationally known artists have coalesced to create the viewpoint and mode of expression that she is known for today. Timothy Clark, Judi Wagner, Tom Lynch, Don Andrews, and Doris Rice are among the artists with whom she has studied. “I don’t believe anyone can teach another how to paint. Techniques and theories can be taught, but the way of seeing is something we must each come to on our own.” Evans Grey has presented watercolor demon-stra¬tions and workshops, and has taught watercolor classes in her own studio as well as at the local university, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. She is a member of the California Watercolor Association, American Plains Artists, American Women Artists, New Hampshire Art Association, and Curious Crow Studios (in Socorro). She has independently made trips to Virgin Gorda, California, Arizona, North Carolina, Utah, Wyoming and Maine for her own enjoyment and that of others who are passionate about painting.
Although her work might rightly be called nature-centric, her interests reach beyond that to include her local environment wherever she has traveled and lived. In an article published June 1997, The Kenly News (Kenly, NC) said her North Carolina barn and rural paintings capture "what historians will come to view as an important part of the state's cultural heritage”.
