Stephen Hall

Stephen Hall, born in Scotland, is an artist who takes a traditional approach to a modern subject. Now living in New York, his work is indicative of a surging talent which has been refined over many years. Each of his paintings is a composition of numerous layers, executed without any modern trickery such as digital assistance or an airbrush and the resulting lush density of color and variation of light owns the viewer’s attention.

Through his work, Stephen explores the relationships we have with not just each other, but times, places and surroundings - couple this with a desire to portray the underlying order in our increasingly chaotic lives and you end up with vivid, yet somewhat intoxicating imagery, finished with a slick style and intense precision.

Stephen has not only been exhibiting worldwide since the early 80’s, but his work also resides in corporate and private collections and has been featured in movies, music videos and magazines. On top of this he has also illustrated book covers for A.A. Milne, J.G. Ballard and Russell Greenan amongst others.

Back to Nature

"My new series which I'm calling Back to Nature is somewhat about the stupidity of man's violence and it's impact on the planet. But not that simple. It's perhaps about threat, consequences and beauty. As always tension in composition, with light, color and pattern." Stephen Hall

"Restricted Diet" “"Restricted Diet"”

This painting has an ecological plea to it. The skeletal bird, the plastic bottle with ribbing echoes the ribs of the bird and the background of dying flowers.
All in all a concern for our planet. Had I omitted the eye it would be merely a still life, but by placing the accusing eye, it gives the painting life.

White Lies “White Lies”

As with all of my paintings I try to paint something beautiful, but with purpose and intent in content. During the presidential election’s I was horrified by the divisive rhetoric being spewed along with the increasing ugly face of racism that had been appearing on social media. This painting is the result so far.

"I am continuing my explorations of diverse cultures both in place and time while being more aware of certain popular cultural references whether in silhouette or as object." - Stephen Hall

Molecular Motivation “Molecular Motivation”

For a change I decided to put a piece of man’s machinery in the forefront as the star of the painting. Seemingly hard and inanimate yet inextricably connected by molecules, atoms and all that the stars are made from.
