Jane Du Brin

Born in Greenwich Village to a fashion designer mother who was constantly making my three sisters and I paper dolls….
We had to color the costumes with watercolors and then add the glue, glitter and lace ad infinitum.
Have travelled, living in Mallorca, Spain and Italy - and then Athens Greece. There was a scholarship for figure drawing at the Laguna Beach School of Art and a MA from Cal State Northridge….
More recently there have been awards for pieces in nationally and internationally juried shows and publications; works have been sold into private collections both in this country and abroad.

Western European painting, and in particular, the drawings of Degas, Lautrec, Schiele and Rodin have always inspired and urged me… later on Diebenkorn and David Park. What I seek are patterns and threads, a continuum over cultures and time… to bend the use of figure as metaphor. And imagery of the human form is used as a vessel for both the expression of movement’s potential, and of innate energy. There is a timeless element to the use of pure line - that essential of graphic abstraction, and inherent in it implied potential for growth.
My preference is for the open statement. I invite the viewer to complete each piece based upon his or her own personal history and experience, and this interaction grants each work added dimension - another “life”.
