Hello Darkness My Old Friend, I've Come To Talk With You Again

Originally, “Hello Darkness, My Old Friend, I’ve Come to Talk With You Again” focused on my interaction with mental illness and how I saw it affect individuals in a familial context. However on 9th June 2015, I myself was officially diagnosed with depression and anxiety, thus this series explores the impact of mental illness on individuals in family relationships as well as individual insight to the emotional and mental torment I personally experienced. Being subject to depression and anxiety can only be explained as terrifying, being your own worst enemy, manipulating yourself into a completely different persona thinking that death is your only option. It disabled my ability to engage in an active social life, disconnected relationships in my family as well as strongly affecting other family members and restricted my ability to even leave the house. Through the shift of this concept, these artworks became therapeutic and a reason why I am alive today and able to express personal accounts to instigate the ridding of stigma still behind anxiety and depression today. With the use of various unconventional mediums such as ink and watercolour, influenced particularly by the works of Agnes Cecile and Carne Griffiths, I have displayed the emotional impact individuals can suffer being exposed to mental illness. With expressionistic and realistic elements, I aimed to highlight the emotional alteration individuals can be subject to when exposed to such mental illnesses.
