Medium: Cut Copper andCopper electroformed face on solid cold cast bronze and natural feathers. Electroforming is a process similar to electroplating, except it is much thicker, since electroforming takes many hours to achieve a desired thickness compared to plating. After the many steps in producing a mold from the clay, it is then cast in cold cast bronze. The next step is to submerge to piece in an acid based solution and electrical currents to transfer copper ions onto the surface for several hours to the desired thickness. The piece is then polished and sometimes acid patinas are applied. Natural featheres are attached as well as the rest of the hand cut copper and necklace.
This is a Limited Edition of 35. Signed and numbered.
My depiction of a Mayan Priest or Shaman with the Mayan Calendar as necklace. Beautiful view from any angle.
The ancient Shaman was resposible for healing the sick, revealing the arcane and forseeing the future from a numerical system of knowledge derived from the universe and using his power to control events that affected fertility, crops and the tribe itself. The orbital cycle of Pleiades, position of the Sun, the Moon as well as Venus guided the Maya in the activities and destiny of mankind. He or she was the keeper of the people's well being as a whole.
I created this piece in clay to be cast (head only) in solid cold cast bronze ( a mixture of metals and resin) and then copper electroformed. Electroforming is a process similar to plating except it is much thicker and takes hours compared to plating in minutes to acheive the desired thickness. The piece is submerged in an acid based solution and electrical currents used to transfer the copper ions to the surface of the piece to the desired thickness. The rest is hand cut copper and steel, welded, polished, and set on a 2 (in) granite base with accents of natural green patinas. The Mayan Calendar necklace is also electroformed. This piece is set on a 2" marble base.
