Julie Greig lives in the historic village of Burkes Pass, Mackenzie Country, New Zealand where she paints from her studio and gallery.
Julie exhibits with the Queenstown Gallery of Fine Art, Queenstown, The Artists Room Gallery, Dunedin and her own gallery in Burkes Pass.
Julie is best known for details, texture and atmosphere in her pastel paintings. Julie also paints in oils on canvas or panel, sometimes acrylics or oil sticks, and enjoys creating oil mono prints and drawing expressive works in graphite or charcoal. Julie has also illustrated and designed children’s books, and postage stamps.
In 2017, Julie was awarded the status of as Master Pastellist by Pastel Artists of NZ (MPANZ) in recognition of the work and awards she has achieved. To date, she is the third to achieve this honour in New Zealand. In 2016, Julie was elected a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America (PSA).
Julie was encouraged by her father, George Greig, to begin drawing at a young age, using charcoal and soft pastels. She continues to explore her painting techniques in various media, finding the infinite possibilities of making art enthralling.
“The subjects I paint are real and often commonplace, I chose these subjects based on my personal response to them in order to share a moment or a pose - to remind us in our busy lives that there is simple beauty to be found all around us when we take the time to pause and really see. Painting is all about learning to see.
The 'wow' moment found when working on a painting creates its own momentum, I am caught in the grip of creating and find it frustrating to stop! Solitude and clear time to paint uninterrupted are vital.
I use archival painting materials in whichever medium I am working in, to guarantee longevity of the finished piece for generations ahead.”
Working with Whanganui glass artist, Greg Hall, Julie is designing and painting 32 stained glass windows, 'The ‘Whanganui Story’. The windows are a historical project for the Whanganui District Council, displayed in the Council Chambers, illustrating Whanganui’s history. Visitors to Whanganui are welcome to view the windows.
