Sarah Elyse Granetz lives in New York, New York and is currently represented by Agora Gallery. She was a Summer Resident at School of Visual Arts last year.
She received her B.A. in Fine Arts from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. During this time, Sarah spent a semester in Paris, France. What began as a "self portrait" assignment has transformed into My Body Is Not For Sale, a meditative series on the female form through literal impressions of the artist’s actual body.
Something was taken from me [something inherently belonging to me], and I am taking it back.
When I could no longer recognize myself, I knew I had to reclaim what was mine. With color and canvas, I abstracted what I had become into prints, impressions of this person I did not know, until I began to feel like myself again. By acknowledging the wound, I could finally let it heal.
Barbara Kruger was right: “your body is a battleground.” But the fight belongs to you and you alone. Through this series, My Body Is Not For Sale, I reclaim the way my body is perceived by controlling what you do (and don’t) see. [I usurp whatever power you think you have over me, and sometimes even create something beautiful.]
My body is not for sale. It is mine and mine alone.
