MELODY E LOCKE

Location:

A naturalized Texan, Melody Locke
creates fine art prints using traditional and alternative photographic
processes. Her portfolio includes stunning B&W and infrared film prints
developed in a traditional wet darkroom. She also employs non-camera
photographic processes, such as lumen printing, to create vibrant and ethereal
images from botanical material and negatives.

Melody's studio is located in the
Houston Arts District at Silver Street Studios at Sawyer Yards. She invites the
public to her studio every second and third Saturday of the month. On most
weekdays, you can find her in her studio during the early afternoon, and she is
more than happy to schedule appointments to accommodate other times.

Melody graduated from the
University of Houston and began her long-term association with the Museum of
Fine Arts, Houston Glassell School of Art, in 2007. She is an active member of
local arts organizations and has served on the board of Women in the Visual and
Literary Arts since 2018. Melody and her husband live in Houston and are
dutiful servants to Maggie, their cat.

Alternative Photographic Prints

Lumen printing is an alternative form of photography that doesn't use a camera. I find similarities between the process of capturing lumen images and my grandmother’s flower pressing. Just as my grandmother carefully pressed flowers between the pages of a book to preserve their beauty, I capture the essence of plants and flowers in my lumen images by pressing flowers against light-sensitive paper. The resulting photographic images are not only visually stunning but also hold a personal significance for me.

My art reflects my appreciation for the peace and beauty of the natural world, a feeling that I hope is felt by those who view my work.

Myrtle and Ivy “Myrtle and Ivy”

I created this print for a collaboration exhibition between artists and writers. The theme of this show was ENTANGLED. I used crepe myrtle and lilies to create this print on Adox Fine Art photographic paper. The dimensions are the dimensions of the paper, but the print has been matted to 28"x22".
