Deb Chaney is a contemporary abstract artist based in Vancouver, BC, Canada. An elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists (SCA), she is predominantly self-taught with a B.Sc. in Earth and Ocean Sciences from the University of Victoria. For the past decade, she has created a new body of work each year and exhibited and sold her paintings across Canada and in the U.S. Currently she is represented by Kunat Fine Art Gallery in Germany. In 2014 she won an honorable award for her painting entitled ‘Storming’ in the 9th Annual Female Artist Competition based in London, UK. Deb’s work appears in the 3rd edition of BC Artists (Leighton Press, 2012). In 2009 Rainmaker Inc. featured her work in a film. She has been interviewed on Novus and Telus TV, CBC Radio, and Vancouver Co-op Radio. Her work is held in corporate collections including, BC Children's Hospital in Vancouver, BC and First Manhattan Mortgage, and The Beach Cities Health District, California. Where Spirituality meets Physicality

Where Spirituality meets Physicality, is a series large-scale abstract landscape paintings by Deb Chaney were created while exploring into the question; where does spirituality meet physicality? In each painting, the earth/ground represents the physical nature of existence where the artist uses heavy body acrylics and mediums such a modeling paste with raw earth materials such as sand and salt to create thick textured earthy matter: "Physicality". The sky/upper portion of each painting represents the spiritual nature of existence where the artist taps into the unseen realm of spirit, faith, surrender, trust, and inner listening allowing these to guide her gestural manipulation of watered down liquid acrylics and polymer mediums to express: "Spirituality". The actual doing and process of creating these painting allows the artist to gain insight into this question of where and perhaps how spirituality and physicality meet.

Fragments of Life

This body of work “Fragments of Life” is inspired by the exploration of pure abstract expression using a limited colour palette and the use of heavy body and liquid acrylic paints along with pencil, conte, and charcoal. Taking these elements, the artist intertwines them with fragments of her everyday life, such as found collage papers, a photograph of interest, or a quote or lyrics to a pop song that has permeated her life that day. She integrates these ‘fragments’ into the paintings with the use of layering, lines, marks, and points to produce the finished pieces that are a visual journey of discovery and exploration for the viewer.
