Daniel O'sullivan

Dan is a self-taught artist, musician and entrepreneur born and raised in Dublin, Ireland.

His mother Moya was born in New York City and moved to Ireland to raise a family of five with Danny's father Daniel, a native of Beare Island, County Cork. After studying electrical engineering in Dublin, Dan emigrated to the United States to pursue a career in computer science. After he received his graduate degree from NYU he started several of his own software development companies.

Dan was however, always drawn to music and the visual arts. The artworks shown on the site are a result of his love of painting and visual expression. With strong roots in both the United States and Ireland, he now lives in New York with most of his Irish-American family.

The Ireland Series

Dan's experiences growing up in the Emerald Isle provide hazy memories for a dreamlike accounting of how this beautiful land looked not so long ago. Indeed, some parts of Ireland still retain this mystical, mythical character to this day. The celtic tiger did not diminish the natural beauty the entire country, thank God.

The paintings themselves are intentionally simple and somewhat idealistic. And who doesn't want to remember happy times that way? Each painting also tells a story and you can click on the thumbnails shown below to see the paintings and learn about this story and how all of the paintings combine together to paint a big picture of this small yet wonderful land.

There are a total of 14 paintings in the series and each one represents an actual experience of Dan's travels through Ireland as a child and as a young adult. Each painting is meticulously hand painted on stretched canvas using the highest quality oil based paint available.

It is the hope of the artist that the paintings bring to mind a sense that one's life need not be complicated in order to be a life well lived.

The Ireland Series has been on exhibit at several New York locations since 2010.

Early exhibitions include the Central Islip and Southold public libraries, the Larchmont Arts Festival, Maureen's Kitchen in Smithtown, Starbucks Coffee Houses in Greenport (shown left, upper photo) and Mattituck, Toast Coffee house in Port Jefferson and Roasted Peppers in Mamaroneck.

More recent exhibitions were at The Oresman Gallery (shown left, lower photo) in Larchmont, the Mamaroneck Public Library, Stanz Cafe in Larchmont and the transFORM Gallery in the New York Design Center on Lexington Avenue in New York City.

Connemara “Connemara”

An original artwork inspired by great holidays in Ireland’s rugged west.

Connemara is part of Ireland's rugged west where the gaelic language is still spoken to this day. A quiet day in a small Connemara town might see only a farmer walking his bicycle, a dog trying to make sense of that strange activity and the odd passerby. Thatched roof cottages with weathered stone walls, set against emerald coloured hills and sunny skies provide a glimpse of what it was like to live in Ireland a long time ago.

The Old Mountain “The Old Mountain”

An original artwork inspired by a summer holiday in Ireland.

As good dreams do, this one paints a happy memory of playing near the farm while on summer holiday in County Donegal. Trying to catch a swift and clever perch in the cool spring waters of Donegal in the summertime holds a good deal more entertainment value than many of today’s contemporary pursuits.

The Lads “The Lads”

An original artwork inspired by sunny days traveling through Ireland’s unique small towns in the summer.

Beare Island is off the coast of County Cork, in the south of Ireland. Here, the lads are doing what lads do well. It's way too nice a day to be sitting inside a pub all day with God's fresh air wasting away outside. Of course the only reason this argument works in the first place is because nobody minds if you take your pint outside.

Donegal “Donegal”

An original artwork inspired by the stories of the hard working farmers of Ireland.

Donegal is the northernmost, and some say, the most beautiful county in Ireland. After a long stretch digging turf from God's good earth, a man is entitled to rest and gaze at His wonders. His best friend gets to play at sniffing around the freshly dug earth, before he too must get back to keeping the pesky sheep from wandering the nearby hills.
