Lynn-Marie Kara is an artist working in a variety of media...sculpture (stone, clay & wood), colored pencil, pen and ink, acrylics, water color, weavings, mixed media and collage. She attended both the University of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) and has further honed her skills through personal study and experimentation with various media.
Several of her earlier works focused upon the European Holocaust with an emphasis upon the personal stories of survivors. One series portrays various Faces of Auschwitz, using a variety of different styles, while another portrays the Children of Auschwitz, all of whom were real people photographed by the Nazis. These are not for sale and have been exhibited at the University of Oregon, Willamette University, Congregation Neveh Shalom (Portland, Oregon), Kristallnacht remembrance (Oregon Holocaust Resource Center), Woodlawn United Methodist Church (Portland, Oregon), and the Woodlawn Art Show.
Other works include portrayals of native Oregon plants, some unusual succulents, and whimsical images for children of all ages. As a lover of horses and dogs, she has also been drawn to portrayals of various animals. She also produced an original poetry/coloring book for children called A Spider On My Nose.
Book illustrations by Lynn-Marie were also included in a book accompanying an exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The book, The Russian Avant-Garde Book 1910-1934, used illustrations which were originally included in two art history works by Esther Jacobson-Tepfer of the University of Oregon (published by E.J.Brill): The Deer Goddess of Ancient Siberia: A Study in the Ecology of Belief and The Art of the Scythians: The Interpenetration of Cultures at the Edge of the Hellenic World. Illustrations by her were also included in Archaeology and Landscape in the Mongolian Altai: An Atlas.
In addition, one of the works from The Art of the Scythians was included on the label for a display (at the Getty Villa in Malibu, California from June 14 - September 3, 2007) of the original gold Scythian phiale of multiple heads of Medusa. She has also provided illustrations for a new book by Esther Jacobson-Tepfer, The Hunter, The Stag, and the Mother of Animals, published by Oxford University Press in 2015. Finally, she has a couple of illustrations of Egyptian and Greek antiquities in Artists and Signatures in Ancient Greece (Cambridge University Press, 2015) by Professor Jeffrey M. Hurwit of the University of Oregon.
