Playing in the Garden

My work explores the relationship between humans and the earth. Plants and animals play a role in The Garden. I remember playing alone in the woods when I was very little and my work is reflecting the peace and spirit I found there. I hope to inspire the viewer that we still live in The Garden of Paradise.

I use abstract imagery to explore harmony and beauty with plants such as the lotus, seaweed ,or fruit. This play has developed into multiple series. The Lotus Sutra, Water Plants, and Conference of the Birds.; which comes from a Persian fable.

Another series in The Garden is war. I use horses as a metaphor for the abuses of war and power. “Tell “Them to Send Fast Horses” revisits an earlier series inspired by Picasso's Guernica. “Things That Fall from Above” is a direct response to the war in Ukraine. You could call it war and peace in The Garden; in that order. And yes I'm angry as I grew up during the Vietnam War and it broke my little girl heart.

But I am reminded by events to recognize the power of a painting in regards to our obligations to live in community. Paintings carry messages within them. And I am a messenger

Playing in the Garden “Playing in the Garden”

Something about plants in the garden. The way they talk to each other and hang out doing their thing.

My Pet Plant “My Pet Plant”

I have a lot of plants in my home and the ceilings are at 10 feet so they grow...very tall!

The Celtic Tree “The Celtic Tree”

I haven't really titled this piece yet but I do refer to it as The Celtic tree...until...I figure it out. Something about the ancient forests and how the trees all talk to each other. And to us if we know how to listen. I haven't figured it out yet as I live in a city but I recognize that they are wise beings. And they feed us oxygen.

Tell Them to Send Fast Horses “Tell Them to Send Fast Horses”

Birds were used as Messengers during times of war. Today we use drones. Need I say more?
