Joan received her Master of Fine Arts degree at Cranbrook Academy of Art. She taught at many universities including Pennsylvania State University, University of Michigan, and was Chairman of Ceramics and Glass at Ohio University. Her work is in several permanent museum collections including The Detroit Institute of Arts, The Canton Art Institute, The Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution, The University of Michigan Museum of Art, The University of California Santa Barbara Special Collections, as well in many private collections. She continues to exhibit her work and presents lectures and workshops throughout the U.S. and abroad. Her pieces are conceived as concepts and presented as abstract sculpture. They allude to dance, music, poetry, and philosophy. Currently, her work incorporates mixed media with hand built ceramic forms.
My exhibition involves abstract, conceptual, translucent porcelain sculpture on and off the wall. The pieces are conceived as concepts and presented as abstract sculptures. My work is inspired by music, dance, architecture, and nature.
I work mostly in porcelain, unglazed, allowing for translucency and whiteness. Tension between forms, line, color, and materials amplify the work. Shadows create depth and become part of the piece.
I enjoy the repetition and variations of creating multiple, similar forms in a piece. My background in dance allows awareness of the space around each element in the work. I become the choreographer and the forms are the dancers.
I work intuitively allowing the clay to fall off my fingers and my subconscious to form the piece, while listening to music. The tempo of the music influences each piece, as a new form is discovered. This “discovery” is the excitement I love about creating.
My work has been published, exhibited, and collected in both private and public collections in the United States, Germany, and France. Newest commission includes the Regent Cruise Line “Splendor”, where my pieces will be travelling the world. Museum collections include: Detroit Institute of Art, Canton Art Museum; Butler Art Museum, University of Michigan Museum of Art, Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute; and Westmont Museum of Art.
