Monica Judy Liu (Mon) is a mixed-media artist from Boston with an extensive background in jewelry making, fiber arts, stained glass and paper art. Her love of community and the social capital that art drives have led her, over the years, to offer her home as a studio to international artists across multiple disciplines.
In 2006, she moved to New York City where she hosted a community of artists in her home studio while she continued to make jewelry and educated herself in various art forms. She earned a certificate at the New York Film Academy and graduated from the New York School of Interior Design. She later worked at the Art Student League of New York
Mon also attended Harvard University's Discovery Program for Architecture Studies and the Mass College of Art (now Mass Art). She has traveled to Canada, China, Europe, and Japan to learn different art techniques to incorporate into her work and enrich and inform her artistic perspectives.
Artist Statement
Touching, playing and experimenting with traditional materials helps me to center myself in the essence of life. As a Gen Xer, I am immersed in an ever-evolving universe of technology and social media where the world can feel cold, artificial, and isolating.
When I am bending and twisting metals and holding soft, bumpy, fuzzy and shiny fabrics, I feel joyfully me-ish, and removed from that tech-bombarded existence. My focus is to encourage the practice of physical creation to celebrate both natural beauty and natural social connectiveness through fashion and home decor.
I look forward to continuing my travels, attending art shows, and meeting artists from diverse backgrounds. My heartfelt dream is to set up brick-and-mortar multidisciplinary art studios in Boston and New York.
