Mika van Vonderen (1970) is a dreamer. Dreaming about freedom, she grew up as a farmer's daughter in the North Brabant town of Zeeland as the middle of a family of five. Like a butterfly she whirled through her free childhood. A stubborn butterfly. "I did it my way or not." She was always busy "making beautiful things": painting, fumbling with all kinds of materials, building huts and weaving with reed grass.
Unknown roads
After puberty, her path to freedom finally began. She followed the Fashion and Clothing course in Nijmegen. Spending hours in a sewing studio according to a fixed pattern created a stuffy feeling. Drawing and painting appealed to her, so she switched to an advertising and presentation techniques course. Here she came into contact with photography and set design and developed her graphic look. Around this time she walked unfamiliar paths, volunteered with young people, worked for various employment agencies and even sold art door to door in Berlin for a period. Nothing was too crazy for her!
Down to earth
In the meantime she painted portraits and the art school continued to draw her attention. After an orientation course at the art academy in Den Bosch, she followed the teacher training course Visual 2nd degree at the Fontys Hogescholen in Tilburg. With her broad background she ended up in education. Back to the structure. “Children are pure in their reactions. They blurt everything out. I teach them to draw and paint and they keep me down to earth. ” But her free work faded into the background and the unboundedness began to call out.
