Axel van Ickx

Location:

Axel van Ickx, born in 1975, is an artist who combines his passion for the arts with an entrepreneurial spirit. He lives in Belgium with his wife and children. His artistic journey began at the SABK in Zottegem, Belgium, where he studied painting from 2013 to 2019.

Axel's painting style is mainly figurative and is known for his use of light-dark contrasts. Recently, he has also developed a passion for making sculptures, via transforming a series of laptops. Despite his talent and passion for art, Axel van Ickx is a pseudonym, and he prefers to let his art speak for itself.

He would like to ask the viewer a question through my works. A critical view of people, a critical view of society. What you see is not what you get.

The Dark Side - paintings

Set against a dark background, images instantly get "heavier", and ask the spectator for reflection.

Arrested “Arrested”

An arrest of drug criminals in a South American country. Head bowed, they are led up the stairs, to where? To the great darkness, the black hole. A film crew tries to capture the scene, but this cannot convince the gangsters to raise their heads. They do not care any more. They accept their fate. Towards the big nothing.

Jerusalem Daddy “Jerusalem Daddy”

A loving father playing with his kids. A peaceful setting in summertime is what we see at first glance, but.. what has daddy in the back of his belt? Suddenly this image gets a totally different meaning. Where is this? Against what or whom daddy wants to protect himself? And his kids? Or is he having other intentions?

The Mime Players “The Mime Players”

A few men playing basketball. All heads are turned towards the place of action. Only… there is no ball. Painting the players against a black background makes them like a group of mime players. By merely making the right movements and wearing the right clothes, 5 men can pretend to play a basketball match. So what are they: basketball players being portrayed as mime players, or mime players pretending to be playing basketball?

Sewer Girl “Sewer Girl”

I made this painting based on a picture I took of my daughter, whilst standing in a sewer pipe in the middle of the desert in Andalucia. The light fell in from the hole above at the moment she was doing a silly dance. That's why the position of her body is somehow strange. I especially liked the image of this teenage girl, for whom cleanliness is of utmost importance, performing a silly dance inside a sewage pipe.
