The Nature of Light Series

In this group of paintings I have tried to faithfully reproduce the light I see that bounces off small aluminum still lives I create. These surfaces are reflecting light directed at the surfaces and light bounced off colored cards as well as ambient light from their location. The results are abstract in their appearance but realistic in their creation.

The Nature of Light: Yellow “The Nature of Light: Yellow”

This was the first in the series and, as such, has less of a dramatic composition. It is sound and basic and helped me examine the possibility of this as a subject.

The Nature of Light: The Cardinal “The Nature of Light: The Cardinal”

This painting is an example of my wishing to make the surface more dramatic than the first painting. This is number 2.

The Nature of Light: Ice Blue “The Nature of Light: Ice Blue”

In this series, this is number 3 and took the longest to create. I have no idea why this one took so long but the result is striking. I think the singularity of a major shape helps the composition become somewhat easier to look at.

The Nature of Light: Fire and Ice “The Nature of Light: Fire and Ice”

This is the latest in this series. This also took a long time but I think less than the blue ice painting. When I started this series I was going to just run through the primary colors but that plan went to sleep when I saw what using more than one colored card for reflected light did to the surface. I also tried to build on the idea of a singular sculptural shape but I fear I made it very complicated. However, I am not saddened by the result.
