Maria Alquilar graduated from Hunter College in New York City with a Bachelor of Arts degree in the Humanities. After earning a lifetime teaching credential, she left the profession to open a gallery in Sacramento. The seventies was a year for Art History to be made in that city. The University of California Davis and Sacramento had professors that were to become nationally and internationally famous. Ceramics, led by Robert Arneson’s bold approach brought collectors from Sacramento and all over the United States to the gallery. Although mostly self-taught, the influences of her child hood art experiences in New York and the vital art scene in Sacramento and San Francisco were an education not found in schools. Alquilar’s public Art ceramic murals and sculpture are in many cities in the United States. Her work for the General Services Administration, Art In Architecture entitled Bien Venida Y Vaya Con Dios won GSA’s top award for its design and execution. she is the only woman in the GSA catalogue of Our Hispanic Heritage. The Rockefeller Collection, The Smithsonian Institution, The John Michael Kohler Museum and The John Michael Kohler Art Center and Museum, are a few of the major collections that include her work. My artwork began after I retried from teaching. My Humanities background directs my interest to all religions, icons, as well as nature. Everything I do invlves a spiritual outlook and a befief that all religions are basically the same at the spiritual leval and in their mythology.

Patzcuaro is an ancient Mexican City with a lovely Day of the Dead Celebration. The boats go out to the cemeteries at night. They are lit with oil rags. There is singing and gifts for the dead. The ceremony ends when the oil lamps burn out.

In Oaxaca the visits to the cemeteries are celebrations nd honor for the dead. Oaxaca is known for it' many different shapes, sizes, colors and tastes of Day of the Dead candy. Lots of Skeletons.

The images tell many stories. The work is papier mache but very strong. It is a mixture of pastes and commercial mache. The LED lights at the top add mystery to the work.

This painting was inspired by the big celebration the Farmer's Union had for Cesar's Birthday. We had also won a huge battle doing away with harmful chemicals and gases used by the big strawberry conglomerate, Driscoll, that is located in Watsonville, CA.

Calle Ocho is a wonderful neighborhood mostly devoted to the Hispanic heritage. I was very inspired by the Players in Domino Park. Even in old age they are bright and amusing and love to have their pictures taken

Dancehall of the Dead was a place that the Katchinas went to after visiting the Zunis ,aiding them in different ways. For example providing rain. However the Zunis were sacrificing children to the Katchinas and also committing suicide so that they could go to the Dance Hall. The Katchinas told them this was wrong. The Zunis were to choose wise men and woman who would disquise themselves as Katchinas during the ceremonies. The Katchinas never returned to Zuni Land but did listen to the prayers and dances of the Chosen human Katchinas.
