He is influenced by artist such as Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, Mark Rothko, Joan MirĂ³, Jean Michel Basquiat, and Banksy. While these artist's artwork are quite different from each other, there are elements of each artist that inspire Dan to paint. He likes colors and spontaneity in a painting.

I was traveling in Peru and was fortunate enough to visit an artist's studio. The artist made amazing clay pots. Besides the amazing paint work on the pots, I was also taken by the imperfect shapes. The artist seemed unconcerned with making the perfect pot which gave each pot character, uniqueness, and a feeling of freedom. These pots inspired me to paint this painting.

While staying in Costa Rica I was sitting on the deck of my small room watching a beautiful and powerful storm. The rain was coming down harder than I had ever seen. Although it was the middle of the day, it was dark and the colors were stunning. The rain was coming down like sheets of water. I painted this painting to honor that storm.
When one of my favorite trees in my yard was knocked down by a storm I was very sad. I took one of the branches and placed it in a glass vase. The branch lasted much longer than I expected which made me happy and inspired me to paint this painting.

While traveling in Kenya I was amazed by how beautiful the birds were. During my morning coffee I would watch the same two birds land outside my tent and by the end of the trip I felt a real connection. When I returned home from the trip I was inspired to paint "Birds of Kenya".
While driving from Utah to Wyoming I saw a cactus all by itself in the middle of the desert. It looked beautiful and lonely - I was inspired to paint "Hidden Cactus".
I was motivated to paint this painting after experiencing the contrast between my peaceful, serene studio and the news of the day and the conflict going on in the world around us. I got a very strong feeling that there needs to be more peace in this world for all of us. If more of us could spend time doing what we love in an atmosphere of stillness I think we might get there.
