Born and raised in Istanbul, Mert Ulcay has lived and studied in 3 different continents. He attended no Art Academy but started his painting studies in 1996 with the contemporary Turkish artist Mehmet Güleryüz and later with his then assistant Sevinç Altan. His work is figurative, naive and introverted, inspired by a photograph or a scene from a movie but mostly created as the painting grows and lives.
