ABOUT THE ARTIST...
Sal Villano was born in New York City in 1944 into a large extended family of many artists. So, at a very young age he was always very aware of art in his life and was naturally attracted to expressing himself visually. He attended public grade school, high school and college. He also studied at The Art Students League in Manhattan. While still in college he assisted his uncle Charles Santaniello, a sculptor, in creating commercial displays for many New York businesses. And helped produce parts of an exhibit for a Worlds Fair in Europe. It was this time spent working with his uncle that he realized he too wanted to be a sculptor. After graduating college he went to work as a commercial artist. In 1969, after several years at this position he started his own art studio with another artist, this partnership provided the opportunity to produce a wide verity of commercial work. Some of the clients they created two dimensional and three dimensional works for are national and international companies. It was at the time he spent at the Art Students league that Sal created his first wire tree sculpture, while constructing an armature to support a clay figure, he noticed that the wire he was using could also be bent, twisted and wrapped to create a tree sculpture. Since that day, many years ago, he has created thousands of tree sculptures of various wire types and gauges and each carefully placed onto a base that is a vital part of the total piece. Whether viewed in direct sunlight casting harsh shadows or in soft candle light creating a gentle form, the tree sculptures created by Sal Villano each take on a personality of their own. The inspiration for creating my sculpture grew from a lifetime love of trees. I am in awe of the stately presence and silent majesty they posses. I find the structure of trees to be one of the perfections in nature. With their roots embracing the earth; in winter they show their bones, in spring gentle buds, in summer a canopy of green and in fall a magical kaleidoscope of colors. Beauty, pure beauty.

Autumn Bonsai - Wire Tree Sculpture
16"h X 13"w X 12"d. Created with 18, 20, 26 gauge galvanized steel wire. The end of each wire is then hammered flat to form the shape of a small leaf. The hundreds of leaves are hand painted in enamel paint using yellows, golds and reds to create a "fire" of Autumn colors. Two antique clay brick pieces are used to visually stabilize the tree structure into a dark green rectangular glazed ceramic container. The tree is planted into a lawn of sea sand and pebbles which are painted with India ink to give the appearance of moss covered earth.

15" H X 9"W X 9"D. Created by using 22, 24 & 26 gauge gold color wire. The end of each wire is hammered flat producing a delicate flat gold leaf. The bending and twisting roots cling to a mound of rocks and pebbles and all is bonded in sea sand. The sea sand mixture is painted in several coats of yellow, green and white India ink. The color and texture of the surface of the mound gives the feel and appearance of moss covered earth. The sculpture sits in a multi-colored glossy ceramic pot. All the colors used for this sculpture are "light fast" and will not fade.

The wire used is not galvanized so it has oxidized (rusted) giving the sculpture an amazingly realistic weathered appearance. The tenacity of this tree is emphasized by its massive root system firmly planted into a base of sand, rocks and pebbles bound onto a 1 inch thick slab of slate. The hundreds of l eaves are created by hammering flat every end of every wire, the flattened leaves are then hand painted in several shades of green using enamel paint. The fully exposed root system is set into a beautifully hand painted floral design 7" round ceramic pot. The pot is imported from China. The tree sculpture is permanently bonded into its base using a mixture of mortar, white glue, sea sand, pebbles and small rocks. The sand is painted in shades of green and yellow, using India ink, giving the appearance of a moss setting. This sculpture can be displayed in direct sunlight. 17"wide x 11"deep x 18"high. Wire tree sculpture with 218 genuine Jade leaves of various shapes and sizes. Some of the jade leaves are flat and others have a slight upward turn at the tip. Each leaf is individually wired onto its branch using a unique method developed by Sal Villano expressly for this type of sculpture. There are no holes in any of the leaves so they appear very natural in their position on the end of each twig. The tree is created using 18, 24 and 26 gauge gold color wire. The roots of the tree are bound into a sand and pebble mound that is painted in greens and yellows using India ink to create the image of moss. The sculpture is in a 7" round metallic ceramic bowl and is permanently fixed to the dark wood 5 legged elevation base. An antique clay brick fragment is set in among the roots for added color and texture. The roots are bonded in sea sand mixed with pebbles then permanently planted in a rectangular glazed blue container. The sea sand mixture is painted in several layers of yellow, green and white India ink. The colors and texture of this mixture gives the feel and appearance of moss covered earth. The copper wire is spaced to allow portions of the steel wire to show, giving the effect of slight highlights. The leaves of the tree are created by hammering flat each of the ends of the twig wires. All the leaves are painted in jade green using enamel paint. The tree, and a very interesting piece of driftwood, are mounted on a 1/4" thick square piece of plate glass. All is bound together in sand and pebbles. The sand is painted using India ink to look like moss covered earth. Mixed in with the sand are several small pieces of pink marble. The tree is planted in a 3" round tarnished brass base.

Kristallnacht, or The Night of Broken Glass, was a series of government-sanctioned attacks against the Jewish population of Germany and Austria on November 9-10, 1938. Ninety-six Jews were murdered and 25,000-30,000 were arrested and sent to concentration camps. The damage to property was also very extensive: thousands of synagogues were attacked, with 267 burned to the ground. Thousands of Jewish homes and Jewish owned businesses were burned and destroyed using sledgehammers and axes, leaving most of streets covered with shards of broken glass shimmering in the moonlight -- hence the origin of the name Kristallnacht. Many historians consider this horrible event to be the beginning of the "Final Solution"

Beaded Bonsai, Beaded Wire Tree Sculpture
9"wide x 12"high x 7"deep. The tree is made of 18 & 26 solid copper wire. The branches and twigs contain hundreds of clear tiny glass fringe beads. Each glass bead is interwoven into wire giving the structure of the tree a very natural look. The tree is "planted" in a hand painted glossy 6 sided ceramic pot that is decorated, in dark blue, with an ancient Asian village front and back. All is bound together into sand and pebble mixture. The mixture is painted in greens, yellows and whites, using India ink and looks like moss covered earth. When the sculpture is displayed in direct sunlight, or very bright lights, it is ablaze with many colors as it reflects all the colors of the root mound and the copper wire.
