Atom Hovhanesyan

ATOM HOVHANESYAN (1981-2018)
NY based artist since 2009, worked primarily in oil and ink. Studied at the Art Students League, National Academy of NY and Grand Central Academy. Traditional choice of materials and medium, grind my own colors. In the abstract works: my goal is to create a unified atmosphere and sense of luminosity. Bits and pieces of forms from memory are utilized as building blocks for constructing the composition. There is no narrative or a specific reading, more of an epilogue that's open to interpretation, I'm trying to create a space complex enough and compelling enough to act as a point of departure, while retaining the often accidental mystery and painterly energy.
Short autobiography written by Atom Hovhanesyan

Yes,
As a faithful and respectful learner, then successor of legendary master’s vision, style and performance, loved very much traditional choice of medium and ground his own colors. And after colossal dedication to art, some times, 72 hours non stop painting or drawing, unintentionally or maybe subconsciously created unique, unrepeatable style and technique in post divisionism and ink drawings, never observed before.
Below, are Atom’s own understanding and description of his art works in these particular two styles:
“Through Division to Expression”
Influenced by post impressionism with cubist approach to composition. The goal here is to utilize the whole surface of the support challenging the viewer’s perception of negative space. Essentially divisionist, the figure/composition is woven in to the fabric of the plane and space warps in to the figure. In the painting process repetitive almost automatic application of the crosshatched lines allows the subconscious the opportunity to direct the composition, there is a tension between the desire to hide vs. the need to reveal, conflict between subconscious and self-conscious.
Drawings in ink: Worked with ink with the same approach, because of the fine lines unique to this medium and the texture that arises from multiple built up layers of cross hatched lines allowed me to focus on light and texture and the feel of the drawings ended up being quite different from the paintings.
“LINE, PATTERN IN CHAOS”
Ink drawings. The seemingly chaotic application of lines ( cross hatches) is intentional, I'm trying to follow in line of the post divisionist paintings, creating a unified fabric of the plane, modeling with parallel hatch marks would go against this, and would make it more of a plastic approach, and would emphasize the distinction of background foreground. In short I'm trying to arrive at impressionistic use of ink as the medium with surreal or symbolic mindset.

Abstract

ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM
"Abstract expressionist paintings leaning towards surrealism. Reductionist approach to composition, the tension arises from the struggle to eliminate the unnecessary while still uniting the pictures in an overall unified atmosphere. I am attempting to create a story or more accurately an epilogue, to invite the viewer in and allow a personal interpretation.
In the latest abstract expressionist series, my goal is to continue the evolution of my initial painterly approach towards more atmospheric or surreal one . I wanted to still use line and gesture as the initial “scaffolding’ of the picture however in the latest series my aim is more towards creating depth and  luminosity, and approach the issue from a storytelling point of view."

Traditional

A considered and methodical autodidact, he busied himself with the study of anatomy, perspective, effects of light, color theory, art history, and the works of the Old Masters and the Modern Masters.
As a faithful and respectful learner, then successor of legendary master’s vision, style and performance, loved very much traditional choice of medium and ground his own colors.
Atom studied anatomy, figure drawing, portraits, and life drawings under the guidance of various mentors namely; Phil Michelson, Michael Grimaldi, Tom Torak, and Dan Thompson. Atom studied works by different artists right from Cubism, Impressionism, Divisionism to Post-Impressionism including artists like De Kooning, Kandinsky, Picasso, Seurat, and Cezanne and Van Gogh. Atom visited museums, bought the monographs of the masters, studied and combined the study of different art movements in art history including the era of Leonardo Da Vinci and Raphael to excel the human anatomy and realistic rendering style which could be seen in some of the portrait paintings made by Atom.

Atom called that "manufactured" art. Nevertheless he has couple of oil on canvas paintings/portraits or pencil on paper artworks with maximal photographic precision. But, when you look at them a little bit longer, you see inspirational artwork, without any doubt.

Guitarist (TR07) “Guitarist (TR07)”

As it turned out later, upon closer examination, this painting is also dedicated to Atom's most favorite artist, "St. Vincent" (Annie Clark). "His ability to appreciate the expressive nature of the human figure and insight into the human condition gave Atom the rare ability to compose stunning works that utilized both the lyrical qualities of line and movement while achieving a profound sense of depth, space, and atmosphere.“ Michael Grimaldi.
