Leni Berliner’s intention in landscape painting is to invite the viewer to share her experience of clearing her head in nature, and imagine themselves in the places she depicts. These paintings convey the mood or energy of a place. Instead of making a realistic depiction of a place, she develops her images through simplification and impressionism. The effects of her work, sometimes compared to that of Finnish jugendstihl painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela, have been called lyrical, moody, dynamic and peaceful.

Ms. Berliner begins by making sketches on site, using life drawing techniques of gesture and contour, and taking photographs to use as references. Although the paintings are based in reality, some are also imaginative creations; most use acrylics, but she has also experiments with mixed media. Many artists have influenced her work, notably Winslow Homer, Milton Avery, and Gustav Klimt.

In the early 2000s, Ms. Berliner studied drawing and landscape painting at the Corcoran College of Art + Design in Washington, DC.
