Artistic Statement
I am a full time working artist, maintaining a studio in the SOWA art district of Boston. My current work is in two areas of interest; first, my Armenian heritage and history; second, my love for drawing the figure. Working in both interests simultaneously, allows each to inform the other. My paintings are oil on canvas, linen or panels. I work with a combination of paint and digital transfers, focusing on personal imagery: people I know and places I have visited. My drawings are figurative, done in charcoal and ink on paper.
My ancestry and roots in Armenian history are the catalysts for my series of work, A History Ignored. Although my grandfather was born in Adana, Turkey, and fled to the US before the Armenian diaspora, I was never aware of my heritage until six years ago. Researching the family secret led me to historic images and family photos which inspire my work. A History Ignored has been exhibited in the Boston area at Galatea Fine Art, the Resnikoff Gallery, The Arsenal Center for the Arts, and the Armenian Museum of America and the Whistler Museum. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide of 1915, my work was exhibited at Lesley University, Cambridge College, The Massachusetts State House and Galatea Fine Art and the Whistler Museum.
