We imagine history into existence every day. Shaping the world around us as we go. And I remake histories with every piece. From a motley crew of tales tall and true. A melange of myths, signs and symbols. Every one ripe for my kitsch confections, which could all be legends one day...
Every piece I create is true. Sourced from truth and grounded by it. But never real. Reality's a fiction we're all subscribed to, which doesn't make it any less true. And that's the thing about the truth. Or the past. It moves in both directions. Myriad, in fact. Never sitting still or doing as it's told. Forever questioned, dissected, reframed and upended. Queered and inverted. Packaged and performed. Told, retold, adapted then sold. Evolving, like everything else. Which is why I like to think my art exists outside of time. Reaching for infinity. Not reality. A kaleidoscope of mish-mashed truths, which are only as surreal as we choose to make them...

Whoopsie — another wreck! By accident, like the rest. She's never known her own strength. And try as she might to soften it, the gentlest swish topples ships. Whipping up waves that spook the brave.

The Tall Tale: Just because they're stuck doesn't mean they're trapped. Where could be better than down where it's wetter? Breakfast, lunch and dinner served on passing currents. Taking what they want, when they want, how they want. Through shifting tides — far and wide — snarling schools who should know better. Of course... they do wonder, sometimes, if it's as warm as they say in Mermaid Bay. Just a stone's throw away, but miles from the comfort of their undersea highway. Known only through rumour, daydreams and hearsay. They can't really be sure if it's really real, anyway. Still, they wonder... would their shell shine different? New patch, new views, bringing fresh shades 'n' hues. And perhaps they'd make friends if they changed scenery. Devil-may-care can be kind of lonely. All they know is they know nothing at all. And no matter how happy they are with their spot, curiosity's rotting its way through the lot. The call of adventure forever in earshot. Will it be better than down where it's wetter? There's no way of knowing but trying their luck.

The Tall Tale: They poke through tides of doubt each night to see if the promise was kept. On the lookout for their lover's return. The wild one. The wise one. The one whose distance made their heart feel conquered. Growing fonder each day 'til they thought of nothing else. The one who promised this would all be worth it, in the end. But that was years ago. Other thoughts had begun blowing in. Passing by like the ships who caught sight of them now and then, intruding upon their nightly prayer beneath the stars. Sails billowing from the crew's gust of disbelief. Hardened souls quivering in the falsetto tones of a church boy choir. Mouths agape. Limbs frozen. Floating by the mighty beast who only wanted to be left in peace. But the crew on these ships would never stop talking. Telling anyone who'd listen. An instant classic for rough shod sailors who thought they'd seen it all. Carving and lacquering the tale in taverns across the county. 'Round kitchen tables with family and friends. At bedtime with little ones, too. Wide eyes searching their wizened face for a thrilling dash of terror from the high seas. And not one of the people who heard this tale — told and retold — would ever know their dance with danger was an aching tale of hope and longing...

The Tall Tale: Some places open up to you right from the start. And my first time in Bangkok was certainly an embrace. It was 2002—not long ago but worlds apart from now. I was 19, preparing for a grand adventure. 10 countries in 3 months—1st time I’d ever travelled solo! I’d scrimped & saved, planned then paid. Ready for anything and terrified of what I might find. Never even considering myself in all that. How my own reflection would tilt & shift in these far-flung latitudes. How could I have known I’d still be friends with folks I met on my 2nd visit to Bangkok? In 2003, en route to London. People I saw every time I visited for 6yr after that. People I still see when I can. People I’ll know until one of us croaks. People that are friends with other friends of mine, looping back to this stream of consciousness with however many degrees of Kevin Bacon you want for breakfast. Bangkok isn’t just my second home. It IS home. As bright and hodge-podge as my bricolage memories of this special place that's changed as much as I have over the years. So very much indeed, and not at all...

The Tall Tale: Something travellers often miss about Bangkok is the city itself. It’s the most visited city in the world, but a HUGE portion of those ‘visitors’ are en route somewhere else—Europe, Australia, Koh Samui, Koh Lanta... the list goes on.
If more people took their time with Bangkok—saw the cornucopia of people eating khao pad moo on the street, or charcuterie in a French restaurant with pinot to match; if they wandered through the higgeldy-piggeldy sub sois, marvelling at the brightly coloured hues of the skinny shopfronts, or the brutalist apartment blocks done up in cheerful tones, filled with lives, stories and laughter; if they accepted that (geographically speaking) Bangkok is kinda sorta the centre of the whole wide world... Well, then the secret would be out. Bangkok would become too popular for its own good! So this will just have to be our little secret, okay?

The Tall Tale: What can you only find in Bangkok? Let me just say, it’s a riddle, in a way: real but not physical; always changing, but somehow the same; here 1 minute, gone the next; replaced by ephemera you’ll never forget. And I'm not talking about its oddities and curiosities. The Maeklong Railway Market isn't unique; that sliver of the city where stallholders trade either side of the tracks. Pulling back shade covers as trains barge through. Mere inches from fruit & veg that line the snaking trail. Locomotives bend through Hanoi's suburbs to this day.
The list goes on: Lumphini-like lizards (& other BIG critters) meander all over the land down under; Mother India's full of lingam devotees—share a prayer wherever you please; you can even ride ‘khlongs’ on Venetian canals, though you’ll pay through the nose for those!
So what's in Bangkok you can’t find other places? Ever been to a gold rush town at the height of its lustre? A throbbing colossus sprung from nothing much that'll sink again when the cash cow's dry. And Bangkok IS sinking, even as the cost of living soars. But its pace never slows, as if the city knows how special it is. What wonder it holds. Look past the chaos, there's treasure to behold!
