Location:

JB Carrera’s introspective work is connecting complex harmony of colors, syncopated rhythms of line and texture with a strong emphasis on intuitive improvisation. Although her Color Studies are a large part of her process, her subjects vary between spiritual and/or current social observations.

Abstracts

I collect inspiration from adventures and add it to my work - Lines, Textures, shadows, and of course, color. Some paintings are simple, some are hectic and energetic. Others tell stories, with symbolism and/or sarcasm, some are discovery and experiments. A Sunrise, a mood, an interesting pattern on the concrete, irritating internet memes, and other small moments that could be amusing. Connection with color is deep in my heart.

Edge “Edge ”

Pandemic 2021:

Bubbles of inspiration came through in moments. Not in unity. I was filled with mixed emotions at this time. Where are we going? What am I doing here? What will become of this new world we are living in? I could not see a positive outcome.

Many techniques were used: Paint pouring, netting, balloons, and etching in paint.

Saturdays “Saturdays”

Saturday mornings were Process Art classes for primary school children. We would paint, draw, and make crazy craft projects for the season. One practice I always asked was that we do not waste paint! After every class, for each year, we had a canvas only for the extra paint from our projects. This canvas represents each student, as well as my own marks, together on one canvas. This has layers upon layers of acrylic and gouache, with variations of marks and swirls.

Blooming “Blooming”

This is a part of my Cherry Blossom collection, inspired by my trip to Japan in spring 2018. I wanted to create variations of blossom paintings that reflect different emotions. Different color combinations, textures, and compositions.

Particles “Particles”

Pandemic piece: Started in 2020, during a lockdown. One morning I was sitting in silence, before anyone else woke up, staring into the sunbeams shining through the window. Small bits of dust particles, sparkle in the light. I never noticed these before... or never had time to notice.

Childhood “Childhood”

Painting: Gouache, Acrylic on Canvas.

This work was inspired by the little art students in my studio. We were trying a new technique-printing with balloons. I decided to try the technique later with my work. By applying the energy of the energetic child, I was able to see what my work could become.
