Amsterdam based artist Merel Ellen explores the ways we are shaped by our past experiences and current emotional default modes.
Starting point is often the mirror; where she finds herself in her own personal emotional development. Coming from a background in neuropsychology she likes to combine different viewpoints, from scientific to more esoteric. She is currently exploring how we flow from one state of consciousness into another and to what extend we can influence this and how we can do that.
She makes drawings, paintings and uses her own and found photographs in her work.
Merel takes inspiration from travelling, nature, big cities, rituals, photography, literature and spiritual theories and beliefs of different cultures.
We are constantly transforming from one state of consciousness into another. Merel Ellen is seeking ways to explore and express this continuum of change we are subjected to as humans. Do we have control over how we feel and if so how?

It is about returning to the essence if we want to transform the negative aspects of our lives

To transform an intense and negative emotion we have to go back home and look inwards.
These paintings are inspired by a recent trip through the Sahara and High Atlas mountains of Morocco. Focus is on the landscape and mysterious and fascinating nature of this country.
