Reuben Sinha

Reuben Sinha’s family moved to New York from India when he was seven years old. Since then, Sinha has been using his art to understand his two conflicting cultures. He is a painter, currently working in encaustics, making studies of a color’s aura and energy. Using molten beeswax to suspend the color pigments that represent memories, thoughts, and dreams, his work explores all that any single color can signify.

After receiving a BFA from NYU, Sinha studied art at the Art Students League of New York, and Columbia University. His awards include the MacDowell Traveling Scholarship and a Fulbright Fellowship, both travel grants were used to return to India to study and paint. These trips awakened and challenged his notions that art can only exist in a cultural context, i.e., his art is always trying to bridge his two cultures.

Sinha currently lives and works in New York City. He was the Founder and Executive Director of artHARLEM, a not-for-profit community arts organization, that produced The Harlem Open Artist Studio Tour, an intimate look at contemporary art and artists' studio's in historic Harlem. Currently he teaches art at The Heritage School, a public high school in East Harlem. He has also taught drawing and anatomy at the Art Students League of New York and Spring Studio. His work in in numerous private and public collections in India, Russia, Germany and United States, including Columbia University, and the Fulbright House, New Delhi.
