DeComPUSter (ComPUSter n.01)

ComPUSter is a set of six works going separately or together.
It is about the decomposition of both organic and mechanical matter, showing at the same time the obsolescence of materials and of minds, ideas and cultures. Old computers and proto-industrial machines share with us the same destiny: the inevitability of decline and oblivion. The language is between conceptual and “arte povera”, mixed with taxidermy under resin, video and performing art.

The first one ("DeComPUSter") shows how the computer is corrupting our intellectual faculties into a brain meat grinder.The blade dominating the composition is both a complaint and a metaphor of the link between the observer and the eye looking from the installation monitor.

The second one ("Calcoli Improbabili") is about Science and Philosophy, the two greatest systems that have governed the fate of humanity for over two millennia, having proved to be false and questionable. What is true today will not be tomorrow; and delegate to science the explanation of reality is an illusion, because the reality changes with the opinions that we express on it. It is therefore perfectly plausible that the equation “1 + 15” makes “cow”, and the (un)Probability Calculator represents the most advanced instrument of approximation to the ultimate truth.

Calcolatore di Morte | Death Calculator (ComPUSter n.03)

The third one ("Calcolatore di Morte") is about war. Anyone who thinks that war can solve problems has a chicken brain. This – in no uncertain terms – is the message of an artwork in which a death machine is operated by a chicken head.  On the battlefield, the “toy soldiers” are dehumanized pawns on a surreal and grotesque chessboard whose stupidity is rendered in an absurd video-projection.

The fifth is "Bancarotta". The greedy mouth restlessy ingurgitating and regurgitating  is the image of the worldwide network of banks, swallowing the energy of millions of people and revomiting it as virtual money which really do not exist, except as a database numbers. The blades and the meat dramatically reflect the savagery that underlies a seemingly protective system (isn’t a global network the best guarantee of security and transparency in order to protect the interests of the individual?), but in truth a violent regime based not on job, but on blood.

The homogenization of culture throws the last vestiges of humanity in the great media blender: selfies, pop-idols, you-tubers, reality shows and what is “politically correct” are the new model of standardised mass consumption, a sugary and disinfected one.
When the measure of one’s worth is estimated by the network popularity, a Likes Calculator is what we need to define ourselves as human beings. Once upon a time, being unliked – especially for artists – was being exceptional: something to be proud of, the mark of one’s own uniqueness. Today mediocrity is the measure of all things, uniqueness is a social crime, and people an amorphous mass that no longer meets, but swaps likes.
