The work of Frankie IP is chiefly concerned with equilibrium - the conditions of a system in which competing influences are balanced harmoniously. Employing a vast array of mixed media on canvas or wood in sculptural relief, the artist’s pop eclecticism confronts landscape, abstraction and conceptual art. Trained in Fine Art and Design in both Asia and North America, Frankie IP’s oriental roots are shaped extensively by his Western education. His hybrid practice absorbs the esoteric wisdom of both East and West to stimulating ends. Using light and its degree of absorption relative to an object as a starting point, these robust compositions feature an endless, free-floating array of juxtapositions and binary associations – light/dark, smooth/rough and dominant/submissive all emerge as reoccurring motifs which are illuminated with rigorous accuracy.
Born in Hong Kong, Frankie IP has lived in Canada for many years and currently lives and work in Toronto. His work is held in public and private collections in Canada, the USA and Asia.
