The central idea of my concentration is the depiction of an Atlantic Blue Crab through different art styles and techniques. I chose this topic as a way of showing that multiple complexities can be found in something commonly interpreted in one particular way. From living in an area that is heavily dependent on seafood, I have always looked at the Atlantic Blue Crab from the perspective of a hungry consumer. I challenged myself to shed a new light on the crab while keeping its basic structure.
To begin my journey of finding new complexities within the basic structure of the Atlantic Blue Crab, I established my initial view by drawing a realistic crab with colored pencils. After creating a foundation perspective, I experimented with multiple art forms, techniques, and styles to expand my understanding of visual representation and symbolism. As my imagination flowed, my projects transformed from realistic to abstract. I kept the basic structure of the crab constant throughout the projects to have a universal factor connecting the variety of perspectives. The common structure creates a sense of unity in a group of contrasting visuals.
