April has been a photographer for more than 20 years. This collection is her first to create and showcase. She felt the need for more positive social imagines of Blacks in Americans. She dusted off her camera and went to work pursuing her passion for photography. It didn’t take long for April to focus her lens on the much talked about and sometimes controversial subject of Natural hair. Hard to believe in 2018, there are open cases of people filing to have the right to wear hair in its natural state. April found her need and began to fill it. Her life experiences have culminated in her establishing her new company Lady Byrd Enterprise LLC and sharing this thought-provoking series entitled "I AM NOT MY HAIR".
April randomly throughout her normal day would approach strangers with natural hair and request permission to photograph them. The collection currently has 46 images.
