Fine artists learn the foundational skills of effective design, composition, color choice and more because they know that those artistic choices, when effectively employed, will create symbolism, evoke emotion, and convey meaning. It is the constant honing of their craft that will produce “fine” works of art that will inspire and impact an audience, whether the channel for that art is a painting, a book, a sculpture, or an advertisement. “Fine” art is simply that which is finely expressed and executed. Des habitats bâtis avec des matériaux de récupération, où les conditions de vie et le contexte sanitaire sont problématiques, les services sanitaires de base y sont inexistants, les risques d’inondations et de glissements de terrains y sont nombreux et aucun système d’évacuation des eaux n'est construit dans ces quartiers. Les favelas ou bidonvilles n’ont pas d’électricité, pas de gestion des déchets, la pollution y est omniprésente, et les risques de maladies et d'épidémies y sont décuplés. Les infrastructures routières et de transports collectifs y sont inexistants.La malnutrition et la faim sont très présents dans les bidonvilles. La criminalité et l’insécurité sont le lot quotidien de leurs habitants.Les bidonvilles sont juridiquement illégaux, car ils sont construits sans autorisation et ne figurent sur aucun plan d’urbanisme.
